Brooktrout boards - Find the Serial Number and Part Number

Where to find the Serial Number

Each Brooktrout Fax board has a white serial number label with a barcode that is fixed to the back of the board.

Care should be taken not to confuse the Serial Number (which uniquely identifies the board) with the Part Number (which identifies the product).

Alternatively, the Serial Number and Part Numbers are available through Device Manager (Windows) or the feature tool (Linux). See below for more details.

What does the Serial Number look like?

The serial number always begins with 2 letters - BS, BT, CS or DS - followed by 9 digits, for example:

BT990516956
BS064642837
CS072004848
DS111000009

What does the Part Number look like?

The Part Number of a board is in the format  8xx-xxx-xx. For example:

801-018-05

This part number is also available through Device  Manager (Windows) or feature (Linux) as 'PartNum', but without the '-' characters.  See the example below.

The Commerical Part Number of the product is in the format 9xx-xxx-xx.  For example:

901-003-05

This commercial part number is also available through Device Manager (Windows) or feature (Linux) as 'ShipNum', but without the '-' characters. See the example below.

If the fax board is installed and active, follow these steps:

1. Stop the fax application

2.  For a Windows system, go into the Device Manager, right-click on the the fax board, and select Properties.

3. Click on the Device Details tab as shown below to display The feature information from the fax board.

Please click on the image below to show it full size
Serial number info from the device manager

In the example:

- the rotary switch on the board is set to 2 (Brooktrout TRxStream Board - Module 0x2)
- the VendorId is BS and SerialN is 64642837, so the serial number of the board is: BS064642837. Note that the first 2 digits after the letters indicate the year of manufacture - in this case, this board was manufactured in 2006.
- the PartNum indicates the part number of the board which is 801-018-05
- the ShipNum is the commercial part number of the board which is 901-003-05

Similar information can be obtained using the command prompt in Windows, or if the board is installed on a Linux machine. Type the command:

feature.exe -m [module number that the board is set to] -q

For example, if the module number has been set to 2, type:

feature.exe -m 2 -q

The above steps will not work if the board uses an older driver called bfax.sys.

If the board is not installed in a machine, of if the above steps do not work, find the information by examining the board.

Each Brookrout Fax board has a serial number label which is stuck on the back of the board on a white label with a barcode. As there are several labels on the board, the serial number can be determined because it has a unique syntax. The serial number always begins with 2 letters - BS,BT,CS or DS - followed by 9 digits:

For example: BT990516956 or BS064642837 or CS072004848 or DS111000009

In addition to this, you can find the following information on the board:

The part number of the board is in the format 8xx-xxx-xx, for example, 801-018-05.

The commercial part number of the board is in the format 9xx-xxx-xx, for example, 901-003-05.

Finally, another label on the board contains the model description, for example, TR1034+E8H-E1-1N.
