STL Partners' report explores approaches to deploying cloud services based on NFV and SDN
Parsippany, NJ, March 21, 2016 - Dialogic, a cloud-optimized applications and infrastructure solutions provider for service providers, enterprises, and developers, announced today a white paper designed to help telecom service providers build and deploy infrastructure and applications based on open source software. The report is a result of in-depth interviews with twenty-one senior decision makers at major telecom operators around the globe.
“Open source is a topic of considerable interest today with our service provider customers, whether they are building applications or virtualized infrastructure,” says Tim Moynihan, Vice President of Marketing at Dialogic. “This is why we commissioned STL Partners / Telco 2.0 to examine this topic to better understand the trajectory of open source approaches in services providers. We were keenly interested to understand where open source was taking root fastest, and the variables service providers are considering when determining open source approaches.”
The report discusses how two key developments – namely, NFV/SDN and increased operator activity in new service areas (e.g., Cloud, IoT, digital services) – are making open source’s strengths more relevant than ever. These primarily center on open source’s ability to drive capabilities related to ‘agility’, such as customizability, faster time-to-market, and experimentation.
Philip Laidler, Consulting Director and Partner, of STL Partners / Telco 2.0 commented, “The telecommunications industry has witnessed only limited adoption to date of open source software – broadly, software for which the source code is freely available for use, subject to certain licensing conditions. In core communications, adoption has primarily been limited to lower levels of the software stack and integration environments in OSS/BSS, with networking itself remaining largely proprietary.”
Open source software (adoption) is both an enabler and a symptom of operators’ efforts to transform. The white paper concludes with six specific recommendations for operators who are deciding on their open source approach. Additionally, the white paper discusses the barriers to open source success in operator environments.
