Addition of latest High Definition video codec improves video performance and reduces bandwidth requirements for WebRTC applications.
Dialogic, a cloud-optimized applications and infrastructure solutions provider for service providers and developers, announced that its PowerMedia XMS media server now supports VP9-based WebRTC video. Adding the VP9 codec to Dialogic’s PowerMedia XMS media server enables full decoding and encoding of VP9-based video sessions between Google Chrome and other VP9 endpoints, as well as transcoding to non-VP9 endpoints. By adding support for VP9, Dialogic® PowerMedia™ XMS software facilitates broad interoperability between video formats and systems.
“The VP9 video codec is strategically important to Google and I expect VP9 support in Dialogic PowerMedia XMS to be well received by developers,”said Chris Vitek, President of WebRTC Strategies. “A scalable media server that supports VP9 will enable a number of new WebRTC applications, bringing exceptional video quality and efficiency to these innovative applications.”
VP9 is a new, open source, and royalty free video codec developed by Google. VP9 offers significant compression enhancements over its precursor VP8. Google’s YouTube video hosting service and Chrome browser first introduced VP9 to consumers in early 2014.
“It is our understanding that Dialogic PowerMedia XMS is the first media server in the industry to support VP9, enabling greater scaling, new applications, and interoperability “, said Jim Machi, Senior Vice President of Product Management and Marketing at Dialogic. “With significant compression enhancements over its precursor VP8, the VP9 codec facilitates bandwidth reductions typically in the range of 20-30 percent, which is substantial when supporting a large number of video conferences and sessions on existing network infrastructure.”
Dialogic’s PowerMedia XMS supports a wide variety of codecs. Dialogic can now provide interoperability and backward compatibility to devices and users that don’t support VP9 by transcoding between VP9 and non-VP9 codecs-- making this a major step forward for the future widespread adoption of WebRTC. The importance of this XMS architecture is that it allows Dialogic to be able to introduce codecs at a much faster rate because it is software-based, compared to hardware-based solutions.
VP9 is significant to WebRTC because it allows for higher definition video calls/conferences at significantly reduced bandwidth. Typically, a 720P video conferencing session consumes between 2-3 Mbps, meaning that a 20 to 30 percent bandwidth saving would be substantial to support a large number of video conferences and sessions on existing network infrastructure.
Dialogic will be showing a live demonstration of PowerMedia XMS with the VP9 codec during Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona, Spain from February 22nd-25th, 2016. Visit Dialogic’s Pavilion in Hall 6 B62 where we will showcase solutions and applications for the Cloud, IMS/VoLTE, and NFV to help mobile operators transform their networks and services.
